Description:
Asmara Restaurant opened in 1986 and has been serving residents of Cambridge for over 22 years. They cater to Bostonians, New Englanders and foreigners looking for authentic Eritrean food. The restaurant's namesake is the capital of Eritrea; it brings forth the country's cuisine in the form of spice, flavor and dining in a family style environment. Asmara provides two kinds of injeras (breads): one from rice flour and the other from teff, a high-grain packed with a considerable amount of protein, calcium and fiber. Asmara also offers traditional tables called "mesob." Diners sit around these woven baskets on top of which plates of food are placed. Asmara offers a variety of food to cater to spicy, mild, vegetarian, carnivore or vegan diners. The restaurant is filled with Eritrean artifacts, a variety of traditional items and several paintings done by an Eritrean artist of his personal visions of the country. Once you walk into Asmara, the owners want you to feel like you have experienced something very different and satisfying with their flavorful food and colorful culture. Asmara has received Zagat's "Excellence Award" five times (last in 2008) and Boston's Best "Creme de la Creme Award" on four occasions.
